Biographical Information

Janet Griffin-Scott
Canadian 1960

Janet Griffin-Scott was born in Toronto in 1960, but was raised in Midland, Ontario, where she had an outlet for her love of nature and the outdoors at an early age. She owned and showed Thoroughbreds and Arabians, had a horse in the backyard, worked on a stud farm after school, and used to get in trouble with her teachers at school for drawing horses all over her notebooks! She attended York University's four year Graphic Design/Illustration/Photography program and started her own freelance art business after graduation, working as a freelance artist for several design studios and advertising agencies in downtown Toronto.

After ten years as a commercial artist, Janet started an equine and wildlife art gallery and framing business in her home/studio. She published "Equine Art News" for five years, all the while organizing several equine art auctions and shows at Toronto's Quarterama and the Royal Winter Fair. She has also shown her artwork at the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibit, Equitana in Louisville, KY, in Long Island, at the Wye Marsh Wildlife Festival, the Cobourg Waterfront Festival, Art in the Park Uxbridge and Oshawa, and at the Great North East Wildlife Festival in Niagara Falls, New York.

Janet's work has also appeared in numerous magazines, newspapers, and on Greeting Cards. She provided six illustrations for "They're At the Post", a television show about Quarter Horse Racing. Her commissioned portraits have been very successful, with over 200 completed portraits to date. Janet works with meticulous detail in acrylic, oil, pencil, pencil crayon, charcoal and pen-and-ink, but her favorite media by far is watercolour.

In 2000, Janet realized a lifetime dream of living on a farm and caring for her own horses. She and her husband James have two children, 16 year old Christie, and 15 year old Micheal. On their ten acres they have Cinnamon, her two year old colt Billy, a four year old Quarter horse Jake, and a new addition to the herd, Melody, a five year old Quarter Horse mare. Janet and family currently trail ride for pleasure, but Janet showed for years in Hunter classes and also Compettiive Trail Riding, 25 mile endurance races. She also Fox hunted and has trained several of her own horses.
