Louis Maurer
German/American 1832-1932
Born in Biebrich, Germany on February 21. Maurer came to to USA in 1951. Maurer emigrated to America with his family, and went to work as a woodcarver. Eventually went to work as a lithographer for T.W. Strong at 98 Nassau Street. He later met Charles Currier, who introduced him to his brother, Nathaniel. He was hired soon after and worked for Currier & Ives for 8 years and produced his best known sporting art engravings including the sought after harness racing images.
In 1872 Maurer founded his own firm, Heppenheimer & Maurer, which produced mostly commercial work. After retiring in 1884, he painted until his death at over 100 years. Maurer died on July 19 at his home at 404 West 43 rd., New York City.
In 1931 Maurer held a major exhibit of his work at the Old Print Shop in New York City in 1931.
Maurer is the father of Alfred H. Maurer (1868-1932) a successful American modernistic artist.
