Biographical Information
Victor Adam
French 1801-1867
Born in Paris, this painter was the son of Jean Adam the engraver. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts (1814-18) and under Meynier and Régnault. He won a gold medal in 1824, and a 2nd class medal in 1836 at the Paris Salon and several minor medals in the French provinces.
Probably better known for his battle scenes, Adam also painted a large number of sporting scenes, including hunting, racing and horse fairs, and English racing scenes, one of which was ‘Amato winning the Derby in 1838’. He exhibited in France until 1838, and when he next exhibited in 1846 it was as a lithographer, a medium in which he specialized for the rest of his life. His paintings were sometimes signed in monogram, and he worked in oil and in chalk. He died at Viroflay.
