Wouterus Verschuur
Dutch 1812-1874
Verschuur, a painter of landscapes, battle scenes and, particularly, equestrian images, was born in Amsterdam on June 11th, 1812 and dies in Vorden, July 4, 1874.
As a painter, he settled briefly in many areas of The Netherlands but lived principally in Amsterdam and Haarlem. Influenced in his equestrian work by the seventeenth century Dutch master Philips Wouwermans, he became the pupil of Pieter Gerardus van Os and C. Steffelaar. Verschuur was a member of Amsterdam (1833) and Rotterdam (1862) Academies. He earned many medals for his paintings and won the Felix Merits award in 1831 and 1832 from the prestigious Living Artists Exhibition in Amsterdam.
Verschuur’s work is held in public collections across Europe. |
