Horse Art and sporting art has been influenced considerably by the patterns in equestrian history and likewise the history of equestrianism. Equestrian art as we know it began with Francis Barlow (1626-1704), who is traditionally referred to as the father of British sporting art. It was Barlow who produced the first published picture of a horse race in England.
The Horse and Hound Art website features a large proportion of British Sporting Art, where it all began. It is a work in progress in an attempt to gather biographies and images documenting the history of horse art up to current times.
